Greenville’s Music Education Program Receives National Recognition

[Greenville, New York] – [April 27, 2020] – The Greenville Central School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.

The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, a focus group of Greenville parents and teachers answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, and support for the music programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

The Music Research Institute recognized that Greenville's music education program is empowered and sustained by consistent support from its community. Music appreciation extends throughout the various demographics within Greenville, and has been a part of its culture for generations. This distinction recognizes the students, families, local businesses, K-12 school faculty and staff, administration, and Board of Education who support Greenville's school music program.

“Music is important,” says Superintendent Tammy Sutherland. “It helps students grow in language and listening skills to think creatively, work collaboratively, to become critical thinkers and problem solvers. Music is special; it helps students grow in self-esteem. It's a place of belonging for students, a place where students can be themselves.”

This community provides unwavering support for the music education of its children. As a result, our students grow up in a nurturing environment which fosters their love of music, and allows them to pursue it without barriers.
