March 10, 2026
This morning, Mr. Bennett was appointed as Deputy Commissioner of P-12 Operational Support at the New York State Education Department.

In this role, he will oversee statewide plans and policies to keep schools safe and engaging for all students. For those who know Mr. Bennett and his background, this opportunity is a true capstone to a career dedicated to ensuring quality education and safer schools for all.

Please join me in thanking Mr. Bennett for his four years of dedicated service to our District and his continued advocacy on behalf of students in Greenville and across the state.

The Board of Education understands there are many questions about the district's next steps and will provide an update in the coming days.

To our Greenville Community,

I’d like to thank you all for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading this District and overseeing the education and well-being of the next generation. With that being said, it’s with a heavy heart that I share that I will be stepping down from my role as Superintendent, effective April 13, 2026.

When I arrived here in March of 2022, I had every intention of retiring as Superintendent. Over the past four years, Greenville has become more than my place of work - it’s a second home. And that has made this decision all the more difficult.

I’ve been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lead in a new capacity, where I will work to advance the educational experience for students not only in Greenville but statewide.

It feels surreal saying that, because my goal was never to be a Superintendent. I didn’t intend to become an advocate for school safety. And 28 years ago, as a high school special education teacher, I certainly didn’t see myself serving at this level. But that’s the thing about life, the most meaningful journeys are usually the ones we never set out to take.

Please understand my departure is not a reflection of our schools, Board of Education, staff, or community. I love Greenville and everything that this District stands for. I was not searching for opportunities elsewhere, but this one found me. And had it not, I wouldn’t be writing this letter.

Over the coming weeks, I will continue working closely with the Board of Education to ensure a clear and smooth transition. Beginning next week, the District’s Communication Specialist will share regular updates on behalf of the Board regarding the superintendent search process. My goal is to make this transition period as seamless as possible for our students, families, and staff.

As I prepare for this next chapter, I will carry Greenville with me. I’ll miss high-fiving our elementary students at morning drop-off, witnessing music bring our students together at the Music in Our Schools concerts, visiting classrooms to see the creativity and dedication of our teachers, and, yes, I’ll probably even miss our silly snow day videos.

There’s something exciting and frightening about leaving a place you love for something new and undoubtedly challenging. But if there’s one thing that my time in maroon and white has reinforced for me, it’s that growth often requires courage, and Greenville has given me just that.

It has been an honor to serve as the Superintendent of this incredible school district. I encourage each of you to stay engaged, support our schools, and continue building on the progress we’ve made together. I cannot wait to see all that the future holds for Greenville.

With gratitude,
Michael Bennett
