Fire Alarm Follow Up

Scott M. Ellis Elementary School was evacuated around 11:15 this morning due to a fire alarm going off. It was quickly determined that the alarm was pulled, but there was no emergency in the building. The individual responsible will face consequences accordingly.

A few minor adjustments were made to student schedules as a result.

  • First graders had just arrived in the cafeteria to eat lunch when the alarm went off. As a result, they missed their regularly scheduled lunch and recess. Instead, they had lunch in the cafeteria as soon as they returned to the building, and each class built extra playtime into their schedules to make up for missing recess.

  • Second graders were scheduled to be at lunch when they were allowed back in the building. As a result, their lunch was shifted outside under the pavilion to allow first graders to finish their lunches

in the cafeteria. Recess took place as scheduled.

  • Mrs. Bryan’s class was in the cafeteria when the alarm went off. As a result, they ate lunch when they returned to the building and went out for recess directly after.

  • Mrs. Schlegel and Mrs. Scher’s lunch/recess schedules were not impacted.

While this was not a planned evacuation drill, nor was there an emergency in the building, I’m proud of our students and staff for taking the situation seriously and acting accordingly. We are also very grateful to our staff members who helped adjust lunch and recess schedules at a moment’s notice. It was not easy, but they all did an incredible job ensuring the needs of our students were met.
