Monday April 27 Virtual Field Trip In honor of our music department receiving a national recognition, my virtual field trips this week will have a music them. Thank you to our music teachers for their commitment to the arts at GCSD: Ms. Rochler, Mr. Clermont, Ms. Catucci, Ms. Cioffi, Mr. Meredith and Mr. Lammly. So, today's trip is to the Steinway factory to see the making of a piano. The making of a Steinway piano is a time-honored process involving the hands of many skilled craftspeople over the course of almost a full year. Steinway & Sons pianos are built in just two factories worldwide - one in Astoria, NY and one in Hamburg, Germany. Both factories have been building pianos for well over a century, and although Steinway has always been at the cutting edge in utilizing and perfecting the latest technology where it could make the piano better, they have found that certain things are simply better when done by skilled craftspeople than by a machine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAInt7hIZlU

Friday April 24 Virtual Field Trip Our final Earth Day related trip for this week. Today's trip is through Discovery education to learn about smart cities. The road to conservation begins with people who live in smart cities. Join us as we delve into what exactly makes a city “smart” and how innovative urban technologies are solving today’s challenges related to the conservation of water and energy. We’ll be on site at Itron’s Innovation Center to see smart city technology in action and learn how Itron’s leading innovators—engineers, data scientists and application developers—are building sustainable communities of the future. https://www.learntoconserve.com/virtual-field-trip

Thursday April 23 Virtual Field Trip We continue our exploration of interesting living organisms on planet earth. This time lapse video shows the movement and growth of plants. You will look at a plant differently after watching this! Plants on the forest floor are too far away from the essential light source 50 meters up in the canopy, but they needn't be passive. If the light won't come to them, they can go to the light; they need to climb. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p005fptt

Wednesday April 22 Virtual Field Trip Today is Earth Day! Our virtual field trip is a "visit" with Jane Goodall. Click the link to see a brief video about Jane and then explore her website to learn so much more about her work. Equipped with little more than a notebook, binoculars, and her fascination with wildlife, Jane Goodall braved a realm of unknowns to give the world a remarkable window into humankind’s closest living relatives. Through nearly 60 years of groundbreaking work, Dr. Jane Goodall has not only shown us the urgent need to protect chimpanzees from extinction; she has also redefined species conservation to include the needs of local people and the environment. Today she travels the world, speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees and environmental crises, urging each of us to take action on behalf of all living things and planet we share. https://www.janegoodall.org/our-story/about-jane/

Tuesday April 21 Virtual Field Trip Today we continue our theme of nature as part of celebrating Earth Day this week. Let's visit with a little mammal called a sengi. For maximum efficiency, the sengi creates an intricate network of pathways through the undergrowth that enable it to reach prey more easily. The sengi carries a mental map of these pathways, and should trouble appear, its speed and intimate knowledge of escape routes help it win the day. I'm impressed with how fast this little creature can go! https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p004v9sm

Thursday April 16 Virtual Field Trip Today sticks with the theme of space from yesterday's trip to the International Space Station. Check out the Discovery space shuttle and a variety of other aircraft at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Discovery (OV-103) was NASA's third space shuttle orbiter to join the fleet, arriving for the first time at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida in November 1983. Discovery launched on its final flight to the International Space Station on the STS-133 mission February 24, 2011. Check it out up close and personal through this site. https://tinyurl.com/ycw3xfo7

Wednesday April 15 Virtual Field Trip With some unusual times happening in our world, today's virtual field trip is to SPACE to get a different view of planet earth. Scott Kelly is a former NASA astronaut who is best known for spending nearly a year on the International Space Station and for spending 520 days total in space, which puts him on the list of Americans who have spent the most time in space. He is also known for the incredible photo library he created during his time on the ISS. Here is a link to some of them. https://www.nasa.gov/content/best-year-in-space-photographs-from-scott-kelly

On this rainy day in NY, I thought a good virtual field trip would be to Washington DC to see the cherry blossoms. The planting of cherry trees originated in 1912 as a gift of friendship to the United States from Japan. In Japan, the flowering cherry tree, or "Sakura," is an exalted flowering plant. The beauty of the cherry blossom is a potent symbol equated with the evanescence of human life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNRgkrFF7qo
