career

Last week, ninth graders had the opportunity to attend a career exploration field trip. They had the choice of learning about careers in the trades, gaming industry, court system, or the medical field.

At the Albany Carpenters Union, students explored careers in the trades. They learned about the process of joining a union and participated in hands-on carpentry and construction projects. They cycled through different stations, introducing them to some of the skills that they would learn through an apprenticeship.

The Albany Supreme Court and NYS Capitol Building introduced students to the judicial system. The Honorable Christina L. Ryba welcomed students into the courtroom and talked about her path to the bench. Students also heard from a court stenographer and a court officer, who discussed additional career options in the court system. Students finished the day with a tour of the Capitol, learning about its history and seeing the operations spaces of elected officials, lobbyists, support staff, and more.

At WB Gaming and the Center of Gravity/Tech Valley Game Space in Troy, students learned about careers in video gaming and design. They heard from developers working on new video games and toured a space where they learned about opportunities and resources for independent designers.

Students who visited Maria College explored careers in the medical field and even had the opportunity to try out their virtual reality systems and complete a medical simulation.

Each year, Kendall Fritze, our K-12 School Counselor, and Matt Berkshire, our Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, partner with Questar III’s Jim Church to organize career exploration field trips and provide our students with these incredible opportunities.
